A workshop ‘Whale watching tourism: opportunity for knowledge of the resource and its dissemination´ is doing the rounds in Motril schools. Developed by the Costa Granada Group in collaboration with the Motril City Council, the workshops are designed to raise environmental awareness.
Funded by the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) along with regional government support, the workshops were originally going to be held in infant and primary schools. The need for care due to the Covid-19 pandemic meant that these have had to be undertaken electronically, but are believed to have achieved their end goal of making youngsters aware of the need to conserve and protect cetaceans, dolphin and whale species.
Ten schools have been involved in the workshops, with teachers being provided with all the necessary tools to raise awareness and to educate the children. Promotional material has also been provided to schools to ensure the message is not forgotten. Children were also provided with interactive activities have been provided with a certificate of attendance.
