Liverpool win thrilling five-goal Champions League encounter with Atletico Madrid

When Liverpool travelled to the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid tonight, Tuesday, October 19, to take on Spanish champions Atletico, they could never have expected to be involved in such a thrilling encounter. A five-goal, action-packed, and at times controversial match, must have had football fans on the edges of their sofas.

This was Champions League football at its highest level, with the top two in Group B fighting for the top spot. Both teams were stunning in attack, but left a lot to be desired at the back.

Jurgen Klopp must have thought he was in heaven as his Reds went two goals up within 13 minutes. Mo Salah was on the scoresheet yet again after eight minutes, finishing low beyond Oblak.

A brilliant volley from Naby Keita doubled Liverpool’s lead in the 13th minute.

French striker Antoine Griezmann then repaid the Spanish club’s faith in bringing him back from Barcelona when he struck twice to level the scores before halftime. He seems to have regained that killer instinct he lost when he went to the Nou Camp, as a close finish on 20 minutes, followed by a superb turn to fire past Allison after 34 minutes proved.

Griezmann went from hero to villain in the 52nd minute when he picked up a straight red card for what didn’t seem intentional but was deemed a high kick by the referee.

Mario Hermosa then gave the Reds a huge chance to steal the game, as he bundled Diego Jota over, for Salah to step up and calmly put the penalty away to make it 3-2. This goal was his 31st in Europe, overtaking Steven Gerrard as their top scorer in the Champions League.

It was Jota involved in the action again when he clumsily tangled with Jose Maria Gimenez and the ref blew for a penalty. A lengthy VAR check ruled it out and Liverpool were still ahead. This mighty win in Madrid takes them five points clear at the top of Group B.
