England hit with Wembley fan ban after Euro 2020 chaos

In a statement released today, Monday, October 18, European football’s governing body  UEFA has announced that the English FA has been hit with a fine of €100,000. This comes after an investigation into the chaotic scenes that marred the final of Euro 2020 against Italy at Wembley on July 11.

England must also play their next two home matches in any UEFA competition without fans being allowed in the stadium. A suspended probationary period of two years is being allowed for the second of the two games.

This fine and the two-match ban were imposed by UEFA, “For the lack of order and discipline inside and around the stadium, for the invasion of the field of play, for the throwing of objects, and for the disturbances during the national anthems”, according to UEFA.

Scenes from Wembley were beamed around the world on July 11, and all over social networks, showing ticketless England supporters storming security barriers outside the stadium before the start of the final. An independent review has been commissioned by the FA into the incident, but as yet there has been no report.

A spokesperson for the English FA commented on the ban, “Although we are disappointed with the verdict, we acknowledge the outcome of this UEFA decision. We condemn the terrible behaviour of the individuals who caused disgraceful scenes in and around Wembley Stadium at the Euro 2020 final, and we deeply regret that some of them were able to enter the stadium”.

The FA has already been charged by UEFA on four separate incidents after they conducted a disciplinary investigation two days after the final. These were for fans invading the pitch, the lighting of fireworks, objects being thrown, and not respecting the national anthem.

On top of the four charges, the FA was handed a fine of €30,000 for another incident during the Wembley semi-final that involved a laser pointer being shone into the face of Kasper Schmeichel, the Danish goalkeeper, as reported by uk.yahoo.com.
