Cocaine smuggling Brit granny dies in ‘rat infested’ jail in Portugal.

Susan Clarke, 72, was caught after she attempted to smuggle £1 million worth of cocaine into Portugal. The Brit granny has died alone in prison.

Susan had been serving eight years after being caught smuggling drugs with her husband and alleged co-conspirator Roger, 73. Roger is serving prison time too. He ended up in a different jail.

According to The Mirror, Susan died of breast cancer last week. She had managed to see her husband one last time though. According to The Mirror, she was unable to speak due to her illness.

Susan’s family had expected her to return to England soon. They expected that she would see out the remainder of her prison term in the UK.

A source told The Mirror: “She was handed a life sentence – left to die in a foreign prison with no loved ones around her.

“She was battling breast cancer but the doctors in Portugal decided that there was nothing they could do for her, so they stopped her treatment.

“She was in so much pain. Roger seems to think they had won a battle to come back to the UK to, so he’s devastated that she wasn’t well enough to make the move.”

The couple had claimed that they were tricked into carrying the drugs. They were arrested as they headed from the Caribbean into Lisbon on a cruise ship. Officials had received a tipoff in December 2018.

The couple were discovered with 20lb of cocaine hidden in their suitcases. This is not the first time that the couple had been caught out for smuggling drugs. In 2010 they were found to be smuggling 240kg of cannabis into Norway.

According to the Foreign Office, they are “supporting the family of a British woman who died in Portugal”.
