NO Covid cases reported in the two weeks following Vera’s fiestas were linked to the celebrations honouring San Cleofas.

Festivities councillor Amparo Garcia later assessed the outcome as “positive, favourable, and optimum” but pointed out that the town hall had taken into consideration the dangers involved beforehand.

“We realised that celebrating important and complete fiestas like the Vera Feria was risky, but at the same time it was essential to convey a message of enthusiasm, optimism and hope,” Garcia said.

It had also been necessary to help local commerce and fairground operators during this phase of economic recovery after a complicated 18 months, the councillor added.

Vera’s mayor Jose Carmelo Jorge Blanco declared that the town had “set an example” by organising normal fiestas while demonstrating that safe celebrations were possible when using common sense and observing health regulations.

“We also took into account when we decided to go ahead with the fiestas that most of the local population had been double-vaccinated,” Jorge Blanco said.

“This also proves that vaccination works and our decision was the right one.”
