The new lava stream on La Palma has reached a different part of the ocean

According to images captured at around 11am this Saturday, October 16, by the Volcanological Institute of the Canary Islands (Involcan), one of the streams of lava from the Cumbre Vieja volcano is approaching a new point on the coast of La Palma.

This stream, say the experts, is flowing down the mountain of La Laguna at a speed of approximately 1.3 kilometres per hour. Having already passed La Laguna, this new front advanced between the banana trees on Friday 15 with a height of about 7 metres.

A new eruptive mouth that emerged yesterday, Friday 15, located about 300 metres southeast of the base of the main cone, has calmed down today, and is expelling only ash, reported Maria Jose Blanco, the scientific spokesperson for the Canary Islands Volcanic Emergency Plan (Pevolca).

Blanco added that it is not foreseeable that this new eruptive point will emit magma, and that, in principle, its activity is based on creating a column of ash, which now reaches an altitude of around 4,500 metres, and the scientists have not ruled out that other new mouths may yet occur.

They predict that the ash cloud and sulphur dioxide emissions will continue to the north and northeast of the island, causing more ash to fall at La Palma airport, which already affects its operation today. It is also likely that the ash cloud could affect the airspace between La Palma, La Gomera, and the north of Tenerife, as reported by laprovincia.es.
