The North face of the La Palma volcano has collapsed

According to Involcan, the Canary Islands Volcanological Institute, the north face of the cone of the Cumbre Vieja volcano partially collapsed this morning, Saturday, October 9. This has resulted in new volcanic material flowing out in various directions. Subsequently, the new lava flow is generating tremendous destruction in its wake, and hindering the movement of scientists in the area.

Involcan has posted images of the progress of this new lava stream in their social networks, explaining that its teams in the area find their work hampered by the destructive power of the lava.

La Palma airport has opened again

In better news for the island, La Palma airport has started operating again, after the ash cloud expelled by the eruption of the volcano had affected the airfield and interfered with scheduled flights on the island.

AENA, the Spanish airports operator has reported on its social networks that although the recovery of activity at La Palma airport has been agreed, the ash cleaning work continues in the areas that are not yet operational. They also advise passengers who plan to fly to check with their airline about the status of their flights.

The volcanic traffic light on the island remains red, meaning an emergency situation. With the volcano’s eruptive process continuing to maintain the same behaviour as the previous days, the alert level continues at 2, on a scale with a maximum of 8, as reported by larazon.es.
