Andalucia’s August heat wave is expected to reach a peak this week with temperatures of above 45ºC forecast.

Andalucia’s summer has so far been reasonably tolerable in terms of temperatures, especially if you have lived here for a while and are used to the heat. The mini heat waves have so far lasted two or three days, with some temporary intermediate temperatures helping to alleviate the situation.

However, this is not going to last, because as from Wednesday, Spain will face the first heat wave of the year, which will be the most intense, extensive and lasting of the summer season so far with temperatures of up to 45 degrees forecast for the region of Andalucia that will last at least until the middle of next week.

Rubén del Campo, spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) said that the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands are facing a heat wave, with very high temperatures during the day and night, beginning on Wednesday, August 11, and lasting until at least until Monday the 16th or Tuesday the 17th, “with the consequent adverse effects on people’s health and the significant risk of forest fires.”

“The cause of this first heat wave of the year is a mass of hot air that is located in North Africa and the central Mediterranean that is approaching Spain and is stabilising the atmosphere, the strong sun and the lack of wind will prevent warm air from dispersing,” explained the MET spokesperson.

From Wednesday the 11th, the thermometers will soar and will reach 36 degrees in the northern Meseta, 38 in the Ebro, Balearic Islands, central and southern half and 40 degrees in the Tagus, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys, all these zones will have or will exceed 20 degrees in the morning.

The nights will also be very hot, with lows of no more than 22 degrees from Wednesday or Thursday in many places across Spain that will remain at least until Monday 16.
