SPEAKING to Euro Weekly News about their business, UK wine experts say Spanish wines are still very popular in Britain.

Founded in 1980, Majestic Wines looked to be in trouble as more people turned to online purchasing but in 2019, it was purchased by American investment firm Fortress for £95 (€105) million.

With the return of former Managing director John Colley, shops and jobs were saved and staff instore continue to offer knowledgeable advice on the large range of different wines that it stocks.

Talking to Euro Weekly News about its Spanish wines, a spokesman explained; “Spanish wines have dominated the best-selling list at Majestic for some time, with key regions such as Rioja a firm customer favourite.

“In recent times, this has started to shift – with more interest across other key regions and styles. “In particular white wines from Spain have started to become more popular, firstly with grapes like Albarino, but increasingly also White Rioja too – including Majestic’s first ever own label Definition Rioja Blanco.

“After a difficult few years in terms of harvests, the region has recently returned to strong sales growth in our 200 UK stores, driven by this increase in interest alongside some other exciting developments; including from regions like Rias Baixas, Toro, Priorat and Ribero Del Duero – showing that Spain is now about so much more than just simple Rioja when it comes to wine.”
