In what is said to be part of the largest economic investment ever made on Benalmadena Costa by the council, the mayor has brought forward remodelling work for the Avenida Garcia Lorca and the renovation of the pavement in Gamonal.
The Mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, and the councillor for Roads and Works, Joaquin Villazon announced on Wednesday, July 14, that the work would be brought forward for these projects in Benalmadena as part of the new town model.
“Unfortunately, the characteristic element of this legislature has been covid: the pandemic has forced us to transform the functioning and way of working of the Town Hall to respond and offer help to citizens through initiatives such as employment plans, tax incentives or direct aid to entrepreneurs and SMEs,” said the mayor.
The works will be the largest economic investment made in the area according to the mayor.  “Now that we are finally beginning to glimpse the end of the pandemic, and given our duty as a local administration to contribute to the reactivation of the economy, we continue to work on one of the most ambitious projects of this Town Hall: the largest economic investment ever made in Benalmadena Costa”, said Navas.
The projects are part of the Sustainable Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI) for Benalmadena Costa. The town hall has received a staggering 10 million euros of EU ERDF funds, and they will add a further 2.5 million euros of municipal funds.
“We continue to work on other projects framed within the recovery of Benalmadena Costa, such as the reform of the Ole square, whose contracting process is well advanced and whose works we hope to start next autumn; or the remodelling of the Alay avenue, one of the most important works that we are going to develop this year and which we also hope to start in autumn,” said the mayor.
Some of the projects are already underway and this includes the remodelling of Avenida Garcia Lorca. The work will see pedestrian spaces renovated in the area of Avenida de Gamonal (the streets Taurus, Pisces, Libra and Sagittarius). This is something local residents have been waiting for, as no improvement work has been done in nearly 30 years.
“All these actions in the Benalmadena Costa area will be linked to the new asphalting plan that we want to implement before the end of the year and, of course, with the current reduction of traffic lanes on Avenida Antonio Machado for its conversion into a large shopping boulevard, with a greater role for pedestrians, reduction of road traffic lanes for other means of transport, such as electric scooters, and new green spaces and recreational areas,” said the mayor.
“With this reorganisation of traffic on Avenida Antonio Machado we are reducing the emission of polluting gases into the atmosphere, promoting public transport and providing new quality urban spaces for residents and tourists, thus reinforcing the city model we want for Benalmadena”, added the mayor.
