A BRITISH woman has been found shot dead next to her partner in a suspected murder-suicide in Spain.
A British woman, 59, has been found shot dead next to her partner in a suspected murder-suicide in Pozuelo de Alarcon, west of Madrid. The bodies were discovered in the garden of their home on a gated community estate in Spain’s richest municipality.
Police are now working on the theory that the British expat was shot by her partner, who was a 66-year-old former pilot of Spanish nationality, before he turned the gun on himself.
A security guard on the residential estate where the tragedy occurred called the emergency services at approximately 2.30pm on Sunday, June 6.
The gated estate in which the couple lived is known as La Finca, with wealthy businessmen and several footballers including Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo also owning homes in the area.
Irene Montero, Spain’s Equality Minister, has confirmed that police are investigating the incident as a domestic violence case, writing on Twitter: “All my affection and support for the family at these difficult moments.”
A spokeswoman for the PSOE party in Madrid’s regional parliament, Hana Jalloul, expressed on social media: “ENOUGH. We are not going to stop until we eradicate gender violence.”
A government office that has been set up to fight gender-based violence added: “We are compiling information on the murder of a woman in the province of Madrid in a suspected case of gender violence.
“If the suspicions are confirmed, the number of women murdered in gender violence killings in Spain would reach 17 in 2021 and 1095 since 2003.”
