MAN CITY Champion’s League Masterclass As They Beat PSG To Win In Paris

Manchester City had a daunting task in Paris on Wednesday evening (April 28), as Pep Guardiola’s Premiership champions-elect came up against last season’s beaten finalists, Paris Saint-Germain, in the Champion’s League 2021 semi-final first-leg at the magnificent Parc des Princes, with the ultimate prize at stake of a final in Istanbul in May, against either Chelsea or Real Madrid, who had played the night before, their match ending in a 1-1 draw.

It really was, to use a football cliché, a game of two halves, as PSG dominated the first 45 minutes, taking the lead on 15 minutes through their captain, Marquinhos, who met Angel di Maria’s delivery at the front post to glance home the opening goal, and they controlled the match, apart from a moment near the end of the first half when the ball fell to Phil Foden, with only Navas to beat, and he blasted the ball straight into the goalkeeper’s welcoming hands.

Whatever Pep said at halftime in the Man City dressing room had an inspirational effect, because the second half was all City, with attack after attack, and PSG seemed to lose their heads and fall apart. Neymar and Mbappe were nowhere to be seen in the second half.

A Kevin De Bruyne overhead kick that whistled over the crossbar could have been a contender for the goal of the season had it been just a few inches lower.

It was the Belgian though who levelled the match after 64 minutes, as he curled a ball into the penalty area, which somehow missed everybody and ended up in the far corner of Kaylor Navas’ net, and then seven minutes later, it was Riyad Mahrez, smashing a free-kick from outside the box, through the wall and into the PSG goal.

Things went from bad to worse for PSG as a nasty challenge on Ilkay Gundogan resulted in a straight red card for Idrissa Gueye on 77 minutes, and with those two away goals in the bag for the second-leg at the Etihad, and the Man City Champion’s League dream is still on, and they must start as favourites next week.
