Nerja will bring together the best national and international athletes for the second Challenge Meeting 2021.

The Enrique López Cuenca Stadium will host the second edition of the 2021 Challenge Meeting on May 12, which brings together the best national and international athletes who will compete in various categories. The event will start at 8pm and have a limited capacity of 500 spectators, it will be broadcast live over the internet.
Daniel Rivas, the sports councillor, accompanied by the president of the Andalucian Federation and Vice-president of the Spanish Federation, Enrique López Cuenca, the president of the Nerja Athletics Club, Francisco Ortega ‘Ayo’, sponsor of the event and athlete from Nerja, Francisco Urbano, made the announcement this morning.
The councillor highlighted the importance of the event, saying: “Last year it became the first official event with the public in Spain after the period of confinement. This year there will be a greater number of elite athletes, so we will enjoy this show even more, taking into account that many are preparing for their qualification in the Tokyo Olympic Games.”
He also thanked the sponsors, Restaurante Pulguilla and Merendero Ayo, for their involvement in the event and emphasised the city council’s commitment to carry on supporting this type of event in Nerja.
Distances of 1,000 and 1,500 metres will be run in the men’s category and distances of 1,000 and 2,000 metres for the women’s category. This will bring together over 20 athletes such as Ousssim Oumaiz, Sergio Jiménez, Fernando Carro, Mariano García, Saúl Martinez, Jesús Gómez, Esther Gerrero, Irene Sánchez-Escribano and Solange Pereira, as well as others.
