No trace of missing 14-year-old Caroline del Valle in six years

Caroline del Valle, missing since March 2015

IT has been six years since 14-year-old Caroline del Valle went missing from the Hermetica de Sabadell area in Barcelona.

Her parents thought she was sleeping over at a friend’s and didn’t discover the truth until the following evening.

The area where she was last seen was used by hundreds of young people to gather and drink alcohol, and at 5am the Catalan police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, arrived. Around 20 youths ran in all directions, all of them, except Caroline and another two girls, had escaped from centres for minors in the area as they did nearly every weekend, so police did not worry much because they usually turned up again on Monday or Tuesday, the family’s lawyer told national Spanish daily ABC.

Her parents say Caroline had made some unsuitable friends and no-one has heard from her since that day.

Police treated her disappearance as involuntary from the beginning and her mother says they police believe Caroline is dead.

In the six years since she went missing, the case has been shelved twice, and Barcelona court has said that “everything possible” has been done to find her. Meanwhile, her mother complains that some of the youngsters who were with Caroline haven’t even been questioned.

The friend who Caroline was supposed to be with, lied for three days about her not having been with her at all.

Caroline’s last phone call was to a Moroccan girl who she had been with and who was living at a centre for minors.

The last person to have seen her was allegedly a boy known as Justin, who has a criminal record and has been sentenced. He had an arrest warrant against him at the time and says that when Caroline was tired of running from the police she hid underneath a car but he kept on running.

The youths regrouped at the Sants station McDonald’s as they usually did, but they say Justin arrived much later, at almost 8.30am and had changed his clothes, but was still covered in mud. He claimed it was from hiding and said he was afraid he would be “blamed”. He said in 2018 that there had been three gypsy men in the area, one of them very drunk.

Caroline’s mother says that they were told in court that she may have been killed and dumped in a rubbish container which may have taken her body to the tip. She complains that so much money has been spent on other cases in which young girls have gone missing but no extensive searches have been carried out to find Caroline.
