THAILAND plans to ease quarantine restrictions for tourists

The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration on Thailand is set to review its coronavirus restrictions on Monday, March 8 in a bid to rescue the flailing tourism sector, the Bangkok Pose reported. Among the measure to be discussed it to allow tourists in mandatory two-week hotel quarantine leave their rooms after three days, and officials will even consider scrapping the quarantine rule for visitors who have been vaccinated against Covid.

The quarantine relaxation measure will initially be focused on the biggest tourist spots, the provinces of Phuket, Krabi, Surat Thani, Chonburi and Chiang Mai, Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn told reporters.

“Why these provinces? They are popular among tourists who usually stay for quite a long time, for one to three months,” he said.

A country which relies heavily on tourism, the sector accounted for no less than a fifth of Thailand’s gross domestic product before the coronavirus pandemic restricted travel. Now the tourism industry is calling on the government to completely lift quarantine requirements for vaccinated travellers by July 1.

The Southeast Asian country has also launched a ‘golf quarantine’ scheme, which allows tourists from countries considered to be low-risk for coronavirus to travel to Thailand for a gold holiday at one of the approved resorts.
