Turkish man attempts to sacrifice son as an offering to God

The man cut his son's throat.

A 42-year-old man tried to kill his 16-year-old son by cutting his throat, in an attempt to offer him as a sacrifice to God in northern Turkey.

According to Turkish daily Cumhuriyet, he put his son in a car and drove him to a forest, where he cut his neck with a butcher knife and left him at the scene thinking he was dead, then turned himself in to the police and confessed.

Police rushed to the scene and found the boy unconscious, so he was transferred to hospital, where he remains in intensive care.

His father, a health care worker living in the Zonguldak province on the Black Sea coast, has been remanded in prison.

The man tried to kill himself by hanging with his tie, but failed and dreamed of offering his son as a religious sacrifice, he explained when he surrendered to the police. He did not explain why he thought the act was necessary.

Both the Coran and the Bible describe the myth of Abraham in which God orders him to sacrifice his son, although in both, God prevented the murder at the last moment, replacing the boy with a lamb, which has led to the main annual rite of Islam, Eid ul Adha, the Feast of the Lamb.
