BBC Breakfast host Naga Munchetty slammed over ‘car crash’ interview with Home Office minister Victoria Atkins

BBC viewers were left aghast after a highly confrontational interview of Home office minister Victoria Atkins over the new hotel quarantine rules coming into play next week. Calling it ‘car crash’ TV, many fans criticised controversial Breakfast host Naga Munchetty for continuously interrupting the minister and arguing with her on Friday morning’s (February 12) edition of the show.

Before introducing her guest, Ms Munchetty pointed out that the UK hotel quarantine, beginning on Monday, February 15, is quite different from measures imposed in other countries, such as Australia, and continued firmly on the vein once the minister was on the air.

When asked why the UK wasn’t planning on following the “gold standards” laid out by Australia, Ms Atkins replied:

“Well we are following the data in our own country and applying the measures that apply in our own country.

“We have some of the most stringent border controls in the world and as of Monday with the introduction of the red list, these measures will be even stronger.”

Munchetty sarcastically responded: “Is the virus not as strong over here as it is in Australia?”

At another point during the interview, when Ms Atkins began to talk about the government focus on allowing Brits to travel this summer, the host abruptly cut across her, saying: “I think the focus has shifted.”

While many fans of the BBC Breakfast show supported Ms Munchetty’s tenacity and attempts to get a straight answer from the minister, other viewers slammed her treatment of her guest.

“@NagaMunchetty behaving like kids on a trip on #BBCBreakfast ….. ‘are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?’”

Another commented: “@BBCBreakfast Naga Munchetty being rude again to ministers and asking questions that were never going to get an answer.
