POLICE Fire Water Cannons At Amsterdam Protestors with crowds throwing fireworks

A large protest of more than 5000 people in the Museumplein in Amsterdam this afternoon (Sunday) has turned violent, with crowds throwing fireworks at the police, forcing them to fire water cannons to disperse the angry troublemakers.

The protest, “Never again a Rutte Cabinet”, was promoted on social media, asking people to attend and show their displeasure at Prime Minister Mark Rutte’s current cabinet and the coronavirus restrictions, but the local authorities had also taken to social media themselves this morning, warning that the protest should not take place.

As the violence erupted, one eyewitness tweeted, “Fireworks thrown at the police, bricks are thrown, riot police in action, police on horseback, arrests really wtf I watch”, and according to local media reports, police on horseback been deployed, along with riot police, and have made several arrests.

The Amsterdam authorities took to Twitter telling the demonstrators to please go home, “The triangle immediately issues an emergency order. This means that no one is allowed to stay on the Museumplein. Go home and keep 1.5 meters away”.

Then just minutes later, they tweeted again, “Despite the many warnings from the municipality and police and the declared emergency order, the protesters on the Museumplein do not disperse. The police now act according to the script. After several warnings via amplified sound, the water thrower was deployed”.
