JACK DORSEY, the founder and CEO of Twitter, has called the recent ban of Donald Trump from the platform “right” but also “dangerous”.
The tech giant’s boss said that, although the permanent ban on the controversial President’s account was the “right” thing to do it also sets a “dangerous” precedent.
Jack Dorsey has spoken of the “extraordinary and untenable circumstances” surrounding Mr. Trump’s permanent suspension following the attack on Washington’s Capitol building by his supporters. He also described the ban as marking a failure of the company, which hadn’t done enough to foster “healthy conversation” across its platforms.
“We made a decision with the best information we had based on threats to physical safety both on and off Twitter,” Dorsey said. The CEO conceded that the move would have consequences for web censorship and freedom of speech, adding that “Having to take these actions fragment the public conversation. They divide us….And sets a precedent I feel is dangerous.”
Although the decision to permanently ban Trump from Twitter has been praised by many, others including some world leaders have expressed their concerns about the precedent set by a company controlling the communications of the US President.
On Monday, a spokesperson for Angela Merkel said the German Chancellor found the social media ban “problematic”, while Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez said: “I don’t like anybody being censored.”
