Spain recorded 80,000 extra deaths in first wave of pandemic

Spain recorded 80,202 extra deaths between March 15, when the first wave of pandemic began, and December 27, 2020.

ACCORDING to data from the National Institute of Statistics published today, Wednesday, January 13, 391,398 people died in Spain during this period, compared to 311,196 who died in the same period in 2019.

The week March 30 to April 5 saw the highest rebound of the year with a total of 20,767 deaths, compared to the 8,807 the previous year – up 135 per cent.

A further spike was recorded between November 2 and 8, 2020, when 10,599 people died, up 2,922 (38 per cent) in 2019.

Of the 80,202 excess deaths, 38,438 were men and 41,764 women, and the majority were over the age of 70.
