HERO police dog Max wins a national award for rescuing a missing mum and baby.

Max is a German shepherd cross and was only on his first shift with the Dyfed-Powys Police in Powys when he discovered the missing mum and baby. The rescue was made in August after a mother and child had been missing for two days. The family car had been found on a road in the mountains and the search area was massive.

PC Peter Lloyd, Max’s Handler said, “You’d never expect such a great result from his first deployment. It was a difficult search. We’re all so proud.”

“They’d been missing for some time, so there was big concern,”

“There was a one-year-old baby, it wasn’t a warm day and at night the temperature had dropped considerably. She’d been out all night with the child.”

The pair had been searching the area near a ravine when PC Lloyd thought he heard something, but it was Max with his keen hearing that had locked on to the sound. Max was then able to lead his handler to the missing family, where the mum was calling for help.

Both mother and baby were rescued safely and Max has been awarded a Daily Mirror Animal Hero Award.
