ANDALUCIA says that up to 70 per cent of Covid infections in the community are the mutant UK strain
Vice president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juan Marin, has insisted that the government must restrict mobility in the community when it convenes on Friday, January 15 to draw up new measures for tacking the surge in coronavirus infections, 70 per cent of which are now attributed to the new, more-contagious UK variant of the virus. Mr Marin said that while hospital pressure in currently under control, if things continue the way they are going he couldn’t rule out that “in the next few days we will not have a significant rebound and we will have hospitals in need”.
The vice president praised the government for thus far “quickly and efficiently” responding to the crisis, but warned that mobility will need to be reduced “significantly” on Friday.
“The reasonable thing is that mobility is reduced and that, in the end, it translates into a relief in health pressure,” he added.
Andalucía recorded the highest number of new Covid infections since the beginning of the pandemic on Wednesday, January 13.
