ON January 1, after a total of 18 years involvement, Val Williams steps down as President of Friends Of The Theatre (FOTA), which supports the Salon Varietes Theatre, Fuengirola.

She began the social side of the Association in 1985 when the theatre opened and in no time at all oversaw the growth of the membership to more than 400.

After a break of some years, she returned in 2010 and since then members have enjoyed cruises, holidays, fund raising events and have helped keep the theatre doors open thanks to €120,000 raised but at the age of 81 she now feels it is time to retire as President and hand over the reins to the younger generation.

However, she is not ready to completely retire just yet and as the Covid pandemic developed she became more worried about businesses struggling in the Mijas and Fuengirola areas so she set up a Facebook group called Simply Surviving Group aimed at supporting such businesses.

Local entrepreneur Alan Boardman has joined forces with her together with supporters Amanda Prior, Jean Dodge, Phil Taylor and Veronica Wallis and everyone is invited to join the Facebook group and do what they can to help with the sad situation that so many businesses are in at the present moment.

The Simply Surviving Group is a non-profit operation. There are no joining fees, no subscriptions and it is a very simple idea kept simple.

Scheduled events:

January 9: Fun Quiz at the Salon Varietes Theatre bar (fully booked)

January 25: Burns Afternoon (including Addressing The Haggis) at El Brujo restaurant, Campo Mijas

February 22: Val’s Birthday Extravaganza: Curtain Up with Ricky Lavazza at La Sierra restaurant, Cerros de Aguila.

Everyone is welcome at these events and for more information please visit the Facebook page Simply Surviving Group.

If you have a hospitality business in the Mijas/Fuengirola area that has been badly affected as a result of the pandemic, please get in touch via the Simply Surviving Facebook group.
