Children Hatch Marks & Spencer Quail Eggs as Lockdown Project

TWO London children set out to hatch chicks from Marks & Spencer quail eggs, as a lockdown project.

The children managed to hatch 12 chicks after waiting patiently, and using an incubator. Ray Moorhead, aged 7 and his four-year-old sister Pearl from Bromley, used a box of 24 quail eggs from Marks & Spencer and set them up in an incubator. Mum Emily had seen similar done online so let the children try the lockdown project, although she didn’t expect them to hatch.

The eggs went into the incubator late October and three weeks later on Friday 13 November the first chick made a welcome appearance. The family are now proud parents of twelve fluffy chicks.

Although much of the parenting has fallen to mum Emily, as the chicks are a full time job. Emily said, “I was sleeping in the room with the incubator looking after them and then I had to help hatch the last chick who got stuck in his egg. We had to nurse him back to health but he’s fine now.”

The chicks have been named, with the first two to hatch obviously named, Mark and Spencer.
