Breaking News: Matt Hancock announces tier changes for the UK

BREAKING NEWS: In an announcement on Thursday, December 17, the Secretary of State for Health, Matt Hancock announces tier changes for the UK.

Following the statement issued by Prime Minister Boris Johnson yesterday regarding the Christmas laws, Matt Hancock reiterated the message from the country’s PM by stating that people “must be vigilant and keep this virus under control”, especially over the festive period.

Hancock continued: “We’ve come so far, we mustn’t blow it now” as he announced that it is necessary to apply Tier 3 to a “much wider area” of the east and southeast.

Matt Hancock confirmed the highest band of restriction will come into force from 12:01 am on Saturday morning, December 19, in Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Peterborough, the whole of Hertfordshire and Surrey (with the exception of Waverley), while Hastings and Rother on the Kent border of East Sussex and Portsmouth, Gosport and Havant in Hampshire will also move onto the top tier of restrictions.

The “vast majority” of places in Tier 3 will stay there, however, Bristol and North Somerset will go from Tier 3 to Tier 2 on Saturday and Herefordshire is going from Tier 2 to Tier 1.
