More Than 40 US States Plan To Sue Facebook Next Week

MORE Than 40 US States Plan To Sue Facebook Next Week in the second case of its type this year against a Big Tech company

It is reported today, Thursday, December 3, in the US, that a group of more than 40 states, led by New York, Utah, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Colorado, are planning to initiate legal action next week against Facebook.

The nature of the complaint has not been publically mentioned, but it is believed to do with the fact that Facebook has been buying up all the smaller competitors, thus creating a media giant that is impossible for anybody else to compete with, having already purchased Instagram in 2012 and then WhatsApp in 2014, which allegedly gives the public less choice of social media platforms to choose from, with Facebook having the monopoly, as opposed to when those two other platforms were independent.

This action was started last year by Letitia James, the Attorney General for New York, who stated, “We don’t comment on the details of an ongoing investigation, but as we have said before, we will continue to use every investigative tool at our disposal to determine whether Facebook’s actions stifled competition, reduced choices, or put user data at risk”.

If this action took place, it would be the second this year against a Big Tech company, after, in October, The Justice Department sued Alphabet Inc’s Google.
Mark Zuckerberg, who has already faced court hearings surrounding “anti-trust” issues with Facebook,  recently made a comment that the popularity of Tik Tok, proves that there is still a free market for consumers to use other platforms.
