Heroic British Diplomat Rescues Student From Drowning in China

A heroic British diplomat came to the rescue of a student when she fell into a river in south-west China.

Footage circulating on TikTok captured the incident, with onlookers panicking at the sight of the young woman seemingly losing consciousness facedown in the waters of a scenic spot. While everyone else screams in fright, 61-year-old Stephen Elison can be seen quickly removing his shoes before jumping in. He swims over to the student and grabs hold of her before being tossed a life ring.

The British Consul General of Chongqing successfully managed to rescue the woman and possibly saved her life. The British Embassy tweeted that they were ‘immensely proud’ of Elison for his heroic act.

UK-China ties have been strained this year over the UK’s decision to ban Chinese telecoms giant Huawei from its 5G networks, as well as the UK’s frequent criticisms of China’s human rights record on issues including Hong Kong and Xinjiang.
