Mercadona has announced it plans to buy 1,500 tons of pomegranates of the Elche mollar variety this season, from the province of Alicante.
The syupermarket giant is collaborating with Alicante suppliers Cambayas, Frutas y Hortalizas Mas Serrano, Alcudia, all from Elche, along with Orihuela-based Plusfruit and Albafruits, Coop. V. in Albatera.
This firm has also shown its support for an initiative launched by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) called “Seasonal Fruits and Vegetables”, and has voluntarily committed to the Code of Good Commercial Practices in Food Contracting.
“This represents a new step in promoting fair commercial practices, is part of the Law of Measures to Improve the Functioning of the Food Chain and is promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) in collaboration with different associations of the entire national agri-food chain,” said Mercadona in a statement.
