Renault to cut production in Spain as crisis impacts on demand

Renault’s factory in Spain is to close on the weekend and cut production as crisis puts the brakes on demand.

THE French car manufacturer had appeared to ride out the coronavirus crisis having resumed production at full capacity with 100 per cent of its workforce.

But a fall in registrations in October at European level and the impact of the second wave on demand has led to the decision to cancel weekend shifts at its factory in Valladolid.

The company told Okdiario that Renault Valladolid – where the Captur is manufactured – will not open this weekend with the aim of adjusting production to current demand.”

This means a drop in the weekly assembly of up to 600 vehicles.

Renault has not ruled out reopening at weekends in the run-up to Christmas, and said it “studies week by week how the evolution of the pandemic affects production levels and the recovery of demand not only at the national level but also internationally”.

The factory employs 4,600 people and normally produces around 1,100 vehicles a day.

More than 90 per cent of Captur’s produced at the site are exported to more than 70 destinations, which has made this model the most exported Renault Spain vehicle in its history.
