SURGING numbers of drug-related deaths in Madrid has led officials to wage war on the narcotics trade, unleashing the ‘largest operation in history against the “drug dealers”.

The police coup, which is taking place at the moment, is aimed at dismantling ten floors in four housing blocks in the Latin district in the city.

The so-called ‘Jimeno’ operation began over a year ago, but it was ramped up a gear in March, when over 200 officers in a caravan of 23 vehicles stormed a property in Cullera Street at 6am, arresting about 20 suspects. Reports say that €6000 in cash was recovered, along with a firearm, jewellery and a plethora of narcotic substances. Officers at the scene said that this “could be the largest heroin point of sale in the entire region”.

On Wednesday, November 4 an operation targeted an address in the Aluche neighbourhood at around 7:30am, following complaints from locals that ‘drug addicts’ have been coming and going throughout lockdown.

Over the four blocks where the operation is focused, police sources report ‘dozens of pieces of paper and bags with narcotic substances that the drug traffickers would have thrown’ when they noticed the police presence.
