Pride of Britain Awards 2020 Honour Unsung Heroes

Pride of Britain Awards 2020 Honour Unsung Heroes and Inspirational Pensioners.

Every year, the Pride of Britain Awards honour unsung heroes who, through acts of selflessness and bravery, make the world a better place. Kate Garraway was dubbed ‘amazing’ by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for her resilience amid husband Derek’s COVID-19 battle and Captain Sir Tom Moore melted hearts while being awarded his honour.

Kate, 53, was joined by Prince William and Kate Middleton in a pre-recorded segment to honour the NHS – a cause close to the Good Morning Britain anchor’s heart since her husband, Derek Draper, contracted coronavirus months ago. Thanking the Duke and Duchess for joining her for the show, Kate, 38, replied: ‘I think you’re amazing to do this – you’ve had such a hard time yourself. How are you all doing?’

Kate replied: “We are doing okay – it’s very difficult, you can’t visit. The children still haven’t been able to visit. I think that is a huge pressure for everybody.” Prince William went on to say: “It’s been very difficult for a lot of people.”

Touching on Prince Charles’ experience with the virus, Kate replied: “You’ve had it in your own family as well!” Prince William has revealed that he himself had contracted coronavirus in April this year.

Captain Tom Moore was announced as 2020’s first Pride of Britain winner in April after he raised a staggering £32 million for the NHS by walking laps of his garden. The 100-year-old hero received a huge number of public nominations, as everything about this remarkable man and his achievements sums up what Pride of Britain is all about.

There was also special recognition for Rhian Burke-Mannings. After losing her baby son and husband within five days of one another, Rhian set up bereavement charity 2 Wish Upon a Star to support others suffering from the sudden loss of a child or young person, giving them the help she and her husband Paul never had.
