Portugal PM pleads with president to declare Covid emergency

PORTUGAL PM Antonio Costa pleads with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to declare a Covid emergency after they recorded 4,656 new daily cases on Friday, October 30, the highest since the pandemic began.

The plea from the Portuguese PM for the state of emergency, as a preventive measure to fight the spread of coronavirus, comes ahead of a scheduled televised address from the president on the evening of Monday, November 2.

Portugal’s last COVID-19 state of emergency lasted six weeks when it was declared back in March but Costa told: “It is a critical moment and declaring the…emergency will reinforce the civic awareness of the sanitary emergency we are facing.”

However, Costa does not believe that the state of emergency needs to be as strict as in March but a nightly curfew could be implemented if needed to limit the contagion of the virus in social settings.

This would make it easier to pass tougher restrictions in the future, such as: restrictions on the movement of people, a suspension of the right to strike and further curbs on public gatherings.

The government announced new partial confinements on Saturday, October 30, that affect the most affected coronavirus municipalities in the country, including Lisbon and Porto, where 70% of the population lives.
