71-year-old man charged with murder in Chessington

A 71-year-old man has been charged with the murder of a 48-year-old woman after police were called to the scene in Chessington, Greater London.

Suspicions were raised to police in the early hours on Saturday, October 31, over concerns for the woman’s welfare and when they attended the scene at a property in Ranyard Close, they found the dead body of the woman.

Keith Bettison, who is believed to have known the victim, was subsequently arrested by Metropolitan police officers and charged with murder.

He is to appear in custody at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, November 2.

Superintendent Richard Smith from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command (Homicide) said: “My thoughts are with the woman who has lost her life and her friends and family.

“This is being treated as an isolated incident and we don’t believe there to be any wider risk to people living and working in the area.

“Local officers from our neighbourhood policing teams will be on duty throughout the weekend, working hard to keep the people of London safe.”
