Breaking News – Health Minister Salvador Illa rules out home confinement in Spain, calling the measure ‘unnecessary’

The Minister of Health, Salvador Illa, announced at a press conference on the afternoon of Friday, October 30 that the current State of Alarm does not allow the application of the home confinement measure.

The announcement comes after Castilla y León and Catalonia announced that they would ask the government for permission to enforce home confinement if their numbers of coronavirus cases didn’t improve in 15 days.

The minister remains convinced that “it will not be necessary to get there” thanks to the “forceful” measures that the autonomous governments can employ within the current State of Alarm.

On Thursday, Congress agreed to extend the State of Alarm for up to six months.

“A long winter is coming, with different parties, said Illa, who insisted that “We are in a situation of uncertainty until the first doses of a vaccine arrive.”
