Woolies is Back!- Woolworths Returns to Britains High Streets After 11 Years!

Woolworths is planning an unexpected return from its 11-year absence from the British high street with three trial stores set to open in late 2021.

The chain, famous for its pick ‘n’ mix sweets and homewear range, went into administration in 2008 and closed all its branches in January a year later. Woolworths opened its first UK store in Liverpool in 1909 and became a much-loved fixture in high streets all across Britain.

A new Woolworths UK Twitter account announced on Tuesday morning: “Here to save 2020! Woolworths is coming back to your high street, as a physical store! “A couple of legal things to get sorted, but we’re full steam ahead at Woolworths HQ. We want to get this right, so we need your help. What do you want at your UK #YourWoolworths?”

In 2017 former Woolworths director Tony Page said that the brand could one day return to the high street. “I am still emotionally attached to it- i still think it has got a role in the future. I have contacted Shop Direct and said, ‘you’re not using the brand anymore, would you consider giving it to someone who would?'” Mr Page said he would like to see Woolworths shops in the “heart of communities” rather than in shopping centres.

The news has sparked great excitement among Twitter users, many of whom are desperate to know if the shop will be reinstating its famous pick ‘n’ mix counters.

“You need authentic Woolworths pick and mix, exactly how it used to be!” one said.
