UN confirms ban on nuclear weapons

UN confirms ban on nuclear weapons will come into effect next year.

The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons is set to come into force on January 22, 2021, according to Stéphane Dujarric , a spokesman for the UN Secretary-General.

A statement released on Sunday, October 25 said: “The Secretary-General commends the States that have ratified the Treaty and salutes the work of civil society, which has been instrumental in facilitating the negotiation and ratification of the Treaty.

From January, the development, production, testing, storing, using or threats to use nuclear weapons will all be banned.

So far, none of the world’s major nuclear powers – the US, Britain, France, China or Russia – have signed it.

The statement released by the UN Secretary General stressed the importance of the Treaty in eradicating the threat of nuclear weapons globally: “It represents a meaningful commitment towards the total elimination of nuclear weapons, which remains the highest disarmament priority of the United Nations.”
