TORREVIEJA’S Real Club Nautico finally removed a plaque naming Francisco Franco as its president in perpetuity.
Following approval of Spain’s Historical Memory law in 2007 banning vestiges of Franco’s 1939-1975 regime, several members had requested the plaque’s removal.
The board of directors routinely replied that the Real Club Nautico was a private entity and the plaque was not on public view. It belonged to a part of the club’s past that could not be erased, they explained.
Despite these arguments, the plaque has bow disappeared and has been replaced with another listing its current president and board.
