‘Extremely reckless’ explosive theft from ATM in Southport

AN explosive theft occurred in the seaside Merseyside town of Southport as robbers stole cash from an ATM, in a crime Police have dubbed “extremely reckless”.

Merseyside Police and firefighters were called to the scene in Chapel Street after an alarm was triggered at a WHSmith at 2.10am on Sunday, October 25 following explosives being used on the ATM.

The amount stolen has not been confirmed yet.

Speaking about the crime, Detective Inspector Tara Dean said: “This is an extremely reckless way to target any premises, one which puts members of the public who live, work and were passing nearby at risk of serious injury.

“The damage and inconvenience to the business are also significant.”

“We have shown before in successful operations, regionally and nationally, that we will bring to justice those identified in such activity,” she concluded.

A tweet put out by the Merseyside Police said:

“We’re appealing for info and remain at scene following an “extremely reckless” ATM theft in Chapel St #Southport at 2am today (Sun), in which an explosion was caused. Any info?”

Detectives are now trying to track down CCTV footage of the area and are performing a forensic examination at the scene.
