ELCHE police will be out in force, ensuring that residents respect region-wide rules that now include a curfew.
Following an emergency meeting with Policia Local chiefs, city mayor Carlos Gonzalez described the new Covid-fighting measures as “adequate and necessary” to halt the spread of the virus.
Latest figures confirmed that Elche had a Covid infection rate of 230 cases for every 100,000 inhabitants, although the mayor stressed that the situation in both Elche General and Vinalopo hospital was not worrying. Between them there were 51 patients on the wards and 10 in intensive care, he revealed.
With increased patrols and 60 officers on duty at any one time, Gonzalez called on the Policia Local to devote their energies to guaranteeing that the public complied with regulations.
He also asked for “maximum individual responsibility and maximum compliance with restrictions” from the local population.
“We need to be fully aware that two out of every three contagions are of social and family origin,” the mayor warned.
“For that reason, measures focus on avoiding gatherings of more than six people and preventing leisure activities from transmitting the virus,” Gonzalez said, announcing that the municipality’s Halloween activities had been suspended.
