Fake Covid marshals are exploiting public fear

Fake Covid marshals are exploiting public fear surrounding the current coronavirus pandemic to gain unauthorised access to people’s homes.

Fake Covid marshals and fraudulent medical professionals have used the pandemic ad an opportunity to defraud members of the public.

The scam, which has seen many people fall fowl of the fraudulent professionals, has seen increasing numbers of supposed Covid marshals use a variety of tactics to gain access to the homes of members of the public including fake medical testing which started as far back as March.

Covid marshals were introduced by the Government to monitor the success and compliance of current UK restrictions with many people retraining to enter the role. Their primary job is to ensure that social distancing in public places was being adhered to.

Although the marshals are official tasked with this role, they have no official enforcement powers and are not permitted to enter the private residence of members of the public.

The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) has announced that the latest scam is an updated version of the one in the summer that saw many people receive fake tests for fraudsters to gain access to people’s homes.

Despite continued supposition surrounding the marshal’s role, the UK Government has confirmed that they will not be receiving new official powers under new Government legislation.
