Escalation in the Azerbaijan and Armenia conflict as the US steps in to assist in the ceasefire negotiation process.

The intervention has occurred after months of intense bloodshed in the region.

The two sides have once again clashed, this time in a number of areas in Nagorno-Karabakh on Friday, October 23. The situation is occurring over a dispute over territory in the region and has been continuing for almost 25 years.

US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, met separately with foreign ministers from both Armenia and Azerbaijan in a fresh attempt to broker a peace treaty and end the bloodshed.

It is estimated that the most recent altercations of the past month may have cause up to 5,000 deaths in the region.

Fighting also continues on the Caucasus enclave with each side blaming the other for a shelling on civilians in the towns of Stepanakert and Martakert.
