U3A VALL DEL POP’s second general assembly of the 2020-2021 season saw members gathering at El Cid in Benidoleig.
The next two general assemblies will also be held at El Cid whilst municipal halls are unavailable, although to accommodate their other events these will move to Wednesday.
Roger Bentley wished his wife Barbara, who is also Membership secretary, a very Happy Birthday and condolences were offered to the family of Ken Grant, a founder-member of Vall del Pop U3A who died recently in the UK.
The Walking Treasure Hunt around Jalon – the first outside activity following lockdown – was won by Rosie and Paul Jackson.
The meeting concluded with Tales to Tell from Clive Browning, an Environmental Health Officer from the 1970s through to 2008.
Clive reminisced on how his work had been more personal before the introduction of Health and Safety rules and the more robust physical defence now put up by some defendants.
Also, he pointed out, many more complainants refer their case directly to a solicitor rather than the Environmental Health Officer.
Clive recalled visiting a old lady who complained after finding that nothing came out when she tried to pour milk from the bottle. He immediately spotted a mouse stuck in the mouth of the bottle and only then realised that she was blind.
The dairy was taken to court and during the intervening months, the sweet old lady would visit his office to bring them cake and share a cup of tea as she was lonely and looking for company.
Then there was the Fish and Chip shop in a poor area of the city where everything seemed superficially acceptable until Clive saw a man with a bucket of peeled potatoes emergency from the family bathroom.
Further investigation showed the potato peeling was ongoing whilst a gentleman was sitting on the toilet and reading the paper to the peeler.
Sometimes disgruntled employees would deliberately put foreign bodies inside food, prompting the story of the baker who ate bread with a cockroach inside it to destroy the evidence.
Clive also advised members always to ensure that food was freshly cooked when buying food from a roadside stall.
