Facebook confirms WhatsApp to offer in-app purchases

FACEBOOK Inc confirms that its popular messaging app, WhatsApp, would start to offer in-app purchases.

The social media giants, who also own Instagram, bought Whatsapp in 2014 for $19 billion and has been looking for ways to boost its revenue after experiencing slow monetisation growth.
The company owned by Mark Zuckerburg is looking to boost its revenue from the messaging app whilst trying to fuse together its e-commerce infrastructure across the entire company.

Facebook Shops launched in May and the world’s biggest social media company has been looking to unify its shopping experience across its platforms with Whatsapp set to enable businesses to sell products via the Facebook integrated software and hosting service.

According to WhatsApp’s chief operating officer, Matt Idema, the shopping tool would start rolling out this year and would offer the hosting service for free to try to draw new paying customers to its enterprise tools.

Idema said: “More than 175 million people interact with a business each day on WhatsApp.

“The revenue is small today, by comparison to Facebook at large, but we think the opportunity is pretty big,” he concluded.

However, it is worth noting that, according to Idema, these chats with businesses are not protected by the Whatsapp end-to-end encryption currently offered in the free, non-business version.
