Calpe U3A’s first general meeting since February

CALPE U3A recently held a general meeting in the Salon Blau at the Casa de Cultura.
Thirty-one members signed in for this first meeting since February, with Calpe U3A’s vice-president Wendy Down standing in for president Verity Waddell who had to return to England due to her father’s failing health.
There was a talk by Pedro from Calpe Red Cross who brought three members of the team – Cristina, Alba and Laura – with him.
The Red Cross are very positive about their work and are keen to liaise closely with Calpe U3A, they said.
Pedro outlined the services that the local Red Cross can offer for those in need, which include the Red emergency button, help with mobility aids and the loan of crutches.
The organisation is also requesting unwrapped Christmas toys for the children of families that have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Liam McKervey gave an insight into his experiences in the nursing profession as well as his work in social services and his job as a nursing home manager.
On one occasion, Liam told U3A members, he received a phone call at 3am asking him to return ASAP as the chef had won a cow in a card game and it was in the kitchen.
When Liam arrived it was a horse, not a cow, and after arranging for the horse to be taken to a nearby farm the kitchen had an immediate deep clean.
Liam has put his name forward to take over as Calpe U3A president at the November annual general meeting, which will be  held on Thursday, November 19 at the Casa de Cultura’s Salon Blau.
Doors open at 10am and the meeting will commence at 11am.
The next JUGS (Just Us Girls) lunch will take place on Thursday, November 5.  For more details contact Anita Sanchez on   tinka.tinkabel@yahoo.com.
