Belgian foreign minister in intensive care after Covid condition worsens

BELGIAN Foreign Minister Sophie Wilmes is in intensive care after her condition worsens following a positive Covid test.

The 45-year-old, who acted as caretaker prime minister during the first wave of the coronavirus, had been self-isolating after receiving the positive test result last week.

However, her condition sadly worsened and she was admitted to a Brussels hospital on Wednesday night.

A source in her office said her condition was “stable”, whilst her spokeswoman said: “She is conscious and she can communicate.”

Belgium is currently experiencing one of the worst second waves of the epidemic in the world, with 10,539 registered deaths and the number of confirmed infections doubling in a month to 253,386.

According to data, despite a partial lockdown that has seen pubs and restaurants close, there are currently 3,274 patients in Belgian hospitals.
