ITALIAN mother abandons her baby who tested positive for coronavirus in hospital.

Doctors at Di Cristina Hospital in Palermo, Sicily, reported that an Italian woman who took her new-born daughter to hospital after the child fell ill with coronavirus abandoned the baby.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica reported that the mother and baby arrived at the hospital in a police car, byt the circumstances around this are unclear. The mother left the hospital while the baby was being treated and police have since launched a man-hunt.

Doctor Marilù Furnari told La Repubblica newspaper that medical staff tried to contact the mother for days, but were unable to reach her.

At that point we called the police and told them the little girl may have been abandoned,’ Furnari said.

The newborn has since recovered from the virus.

Police are reviewing CCTV images of A&E, as well as taking witness statements, in the hopes of tracking the woman down.

Twenty-six children have been admitted to the paediatric hospital’s infectious diseases ward, 17 in October after schools reopened.
