The Spanish Health Minister has projected ongoing uncertainty

The Spanish Health Minister has projected another 5-6 months of ongoing uncertainty amid the coronavirus pandemic until a suitable vaccine has been found.

The Spanish Health Minister, Salvador Illa, has warned of “short confinements” through a range of circuit breaker lockdowns that may be rolled out across the country to battle the ever-increasing spread of COVID-19.

In an interview with Spanish RAC1 radio, the Spanish Health Minister, Illa, said “There are between five and six complicated months left,” and surmised that it was unlikely a coronavirus vaccine would be ready prior to the end of the year.

He also admitted that forthcoming measures would be “drastic but short,” in similar circuit breaker proposals that are being seen across Europe, including the UK.

Even more concerning for the public is that, after a summer that people would rather forget, Christmas will also be a trying and taxing time for the Spanish public due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. He said that the festive period “would not be normal, it will be different and with distance” from what people are used to.

The Spanish Health Minister also disclosed during the interview with RAC1 that he expected a coronavirus vaccine to be available at the start of 2021 however a vaccine roll out would take some time and it would therefore be a number of months before the population were fully vaccinated and the pandemic considered over.

Of the current and upcoming restrictions, he said, “It’s much better to act ahead of time and drastically than to wait until cases start to rise. This won’t be solved in 15 days in Catalonia, in Spain or in Europe,”

He continued by warning that, “The situation is worrying, we must take precautions and we must take this seriously,”
