4G is coming … to the Moon, but it’s not just all for facebook and instagram likes.

Nokia has won a $14.1m (€12m) funding contract from the US space agency to develop and built a 4G network across the moon.

The new contract is part of a massive $370m (€315m) range of contracts that were issued on Wednesday, October 14. The contracts have all been issued as part of Nasa’s renewed push to return to the Moon in 2024.

Nasa said, “The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds, and provide more reliability than current standards,”

The installation of the network could also help in the development of a permanent future base on the Moon.

The idea of 5G infrastructure on the Moon has also been discussed however, at this time, it is thought a 4G network will be adequate and it requires much easier installation and less infrastructure.
