4G is coming … to the Moon, but it’s not just all for facebook and instagram likes.
In a bizarre turn of events it would seem that tech giant Nokia and Nasa have teamed up to ensure that future astronauts will be able to post selfies to their Instagram account and tweet about their experience from the Moon, however only to each other in the first instance.
The new contract is part of a massive $370m (€315m) range of contracts that were issued on Wednesday, October 14. The contracts have all been issued as part of Nasa’s renewed push to return to the Moon in 2024.
Nasa said, “The system could support lunar surface communications at greater distances, increased speeds, and provide more reliability than current standards,”
The installation of the network could also help in the development of a permanent future base on the Moon.
Jim Reuter, associate administrator for NASA’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, said, “With NASA funding, Nokia will look at how terrestrial technology could be modified for the lunar environment to support reliable, high-rate communications,”
The idea of 5G infrastructure on the Moon has also been discussed however, at this time, it is thought a 4G network will be adequate and it requires much easier installation and less infrastructure.
