CORONAVIRUS infections in India top 7 million, set to pass US in weeks and become world’s worst-hit country.

India’s confirmed coronavirus cases passed 7 million yesterday, and experts predict it will become the world’s worst-hit country in a number of weeks, surpassing the US who have reported a total of 7.7million cases. India is currently averaging more than 70’000 cases daily.

Meanwhile, health officials are worried they may see yet another spike with the upcoming religious festival season, celebrated by mass gatherings in temples and shopping districts. This is confounded by the fact that many people in India have become too relaxed about wearing masks and social distancing.

According to Dr. Randeep Guleria, a government health expert: “If we are able to have good behavior in terms of physical distancing and masks, maybe by early next year we should be able to come to a new normal. COVID-19 will not finish but it will be under reasonable control with travel and other things becoming much easier and people relatively safer”.

In a effort to slow the spread of the virus, Health Minister Harsh Vardhan told Shanghai Daily that India aims to provide vaccines to 250 million people by July 2021.
