The Taliban have openly denied supporting Trump’s bid for a second term in office

The Taliban have openly denied supporting Trump’s bid for a second term in office as it says that CBS misquoted them.

The Afghan militant group had been reported as saying that it hoped the US president would be re-elected when Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesperson for the Taliban, was said to have supported the President’s re-election bid expressing concern over his health.

Mujahid was apparently quoted by the American news outlet as saying, “We hope he will win the election and wind up US military presence in Afghanistan.”

Furthermore, CBS also quoted a separate Taliban senior leader as saying, “When we heard about Trump being Covid-19 positive, we got worried for his health, but seems he is getting better.”

The White House, as expected, have issued a response to the statements saying, “The Taliban should know that the president will always protect American interests by any means necessary.”

Trump has previously tweeted that he hopes to bring American troupe home from Afghanistan by Christmas. Such a move could potentially further destabilise the area as the immediate removal of 5,000 troops from the region would effectively end 19-years of US military presence. This would be heralded as a clear victory by the Taliban.
